Pharmacy, the health profession concerned with knowledge about drugs and their effects, draws from the chemical, physical, biological and behavioral sciences. Traditionally a qualification in Pharmacy was associated with a lifetime career as a chemist. Knowledge and training in Pharmaceutics offers a wide array of career options to the students. The programme is no longer confined to the laboratories or classrooms and goes beyond the curriculum. The career options after the programme are also immense. Community Pharmacy Hospital Pharmacy Other Opportunities ANALYTICAL CHEMIST Analytical chemist are employed in all aspects of chemical research in industry, academia and government. They do basic laboratory research, develop processes and products, design instruments used in analytical analysis, teach and work in marketing and law. The demand of analytical chemist is growing across several industries, from environmental sample testing, to verifying the health and safety standards of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and various other products. FOOD AND DRUG INSPECTOR Food and drug inspectors are responsible for inspecting establishments where food, drugs and similar consumer items are manufactured, handled, stored or sold to enforce legal standards of sanitation, purity and grading. The food and drug inspector measures and analyses the safety and quality of raw material and products manufactured by companies, as well as, the processes and equipment used to convert the raw materials into products. HOSPITAL DRUG COORDINATOR Hospital drug coordinator perform administrative duties such as coordinating care teams for patients and acting as a liaison between patients, patient's families and health care professionals. They also oversee budgets, hire and train staff and develop and implement clinic policies and protocols. DRUG THERAPIST Drug therapy means treatment with any substance, other than food, that is used to prevent, diagnose, treat or relieve symptoms of a disease or abnormal condition. Pharmacists are the experts in the therapeutic use of medicines in the healthcare team and may perform various tasks including: Evaluating medication therapy and making appropriate recommendations to patients or health practitioners. DRUG TECHNICIAN Pharmacist as drug technician is responsible for preparation and distribution of medications, maintaining the drug inventory and maintaining patient and pharmacy records in a manner consistent with laws and regulations as well as pharmacy policies and procedures. DRUG INSPECTOR Drug inspector is a specialist who monitor a drug's safety utility performance and consistency from the time it is manufactured until it is sold at a retail outlet. Drug inspector ensures that the medicines are suitable for human consumption. Duties of drug inspector is to examine pharmaceuticals at various stages of research and development, distribution and selling procedures to determine that the prescribed standards have been met. CHEMICAL TECHNICIAN Pharmacist’s career as chemical technician includes the duties of assisting chemists and chemical engineers in research, development, production and testing of chemical products and processes by using laboratory techniques and instruments. They usually work full time in laboratories or manufacturing facilities where they conduct experiments and monitor production processes. |
